Information on how applications for Humanitarian Visas are assessed
· The degree of harm the applicants may have suffered (such as individual persecution, torture or other physical harm)
· The degree of an applicants links to Australia (such as family, social and cultural links)
· Australia capacity to provide for settlement of the applicants
· Whether resettlement is appropriate option at the time of decision (resettlement is generally designed to assist people who are under threat within a country of first asylum or who have no prospects of return to their country of origin).
We have asked for a more generous granting of visas, in 2007-08 programme,
posts in the Beirut region who in conjunction with offshore Humanitarian Processing Centre in Victoria are responsible for processing Humanitarian visas for people from Iraq will have granted around 1300 Refugees Visas and around 1200 Visas in the special Humanitarian program. A significant number of these will have been granted to Chaldean and other Iraqi Christians.
The Department needs new and substantive information regarding their circumstances. Priority is given to those people assessed as refugees by the United Nations High Commissioner for refugees and referred to Australia for resettlement if your lives or liberty is in danger contact the nearest office of the UNHCR, which may be able to assist or advise you.
