In order to apply, there are several steps.
You will first need evaluation of your degree. All degrees obtained outside of the United States must be evaluated by CES which is a division of NCEES. The website is
www.NCEES.org. This is a necessary step to determine whether the degree is equivalent to an ABET accredited degree which will also establish how much qualifying engineering experience will be required to obtain EIT certification and to sit for the PE exam
There are two types of accreditation for Colleges and Universities: institutional and specialized. Institutional accreditation evaluates overall institutional quality. One form of institutional accreditation is regional accreditation of colleges and universities. Specialized accreditation examines specific programs of study, rather than an institution as a whole. This type of accreditation is granted to specific programs at specific levels. Architecture, nursing, law, medicine, and engineering programs are often evaluated through specialized accreditation.
For most USA colleges and universities undergraduate programs are accredited by ABET. If the undergraduate program is ABET accredited at a college or university, the master's program will not be ABET accredited. If the master's degree program is ABET accredited, then the college or university will not have ABET accredited undergraduate programs.
If applicants who have obtained their undergraduate degree outside of the USA have completed a Master's program at a college or university in the United States applicants should check with the school to determine whether or not the Master's degree program is accredited by ABET as there are not many ABET accredited Master's degree programs.
Take and pass the Fundamentals Examination. All applicants are required to take and pass the fundamentals examination unless the applicant has 20 or more years of qualifying engineering experience. After taking and passing the exam, if the evaluated degree was found to be NON ABET equivalent, then 4 years of qualifying engineering experience must be submitted in order to obtain EIT certification. Half of the qualifying engineering experience must be obtained in the United States.
If the evaluated degree was found to be equivalent to ABET accreditation, then EIT certification will be granted upon passing the fundamentals examination.
Please be advised that applicants may take and pass the fundamentals examination before the evaluation of the degree is complete.
To apply to sit for the PE Exam. Please see the PCS website for all of the eligibility requirements to sit for the Professional Engineer Examination The website is
www.pcshq.com. Once you are there, click on applicant information, then under Massachusetts, select Professional Engineer by examination. You will see Eligibility requirements there.
I hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Susan Coco
