Darya Center for developing Woman in coordination with NWCi
From the periods of 25th of July up to 5th of September  2006, the activities was held
 In Nineveh Governorate Area

   

The Purposes and Goals of this program
•   This program was implemented by Darya center in coordination with the NWCI in order to ensure the legal protection for woman and work in order to ensure the issuing of the policies and legislations that protect and activate the civil, political ,economical and social rights of woman for the sake of canceling or mandating Article 41 of the constitution and keeping the Personal Status Law No. 188 of 1959.
•   Holding these workshops will help the campaign of the NWCI to call for the action regarding Article 41 of the Personal Status Law of the constitution.
•    Familiarizing the targeted groups in Dohuk governorate with the contents of the Article 41 to call for supporting the NWCI’s goals.
•   The participated attendees will be familiarize people with the contents of Article 41 to guarantee the legal rights of woman and work to ensure the civil ,political, economical and social rights of woman .

Workshop Activities during this period
 ( See the details of workshops in Table No. 1)

o   The First Workshop was held on the 25th  of July 2006 in the hall of Chaldean  Cultural Association hall  in Alqosh sub district of Nineveh governorate ,the targeted parts where the participants from the members of the above mentioned part along with other participants from the cultural centers of some villages belong to Alqosh sub district who expresses their readiness to attend the workshop ( Nassiria Collective Village ,Shajka village ,Donman village, Bozan village and Biban village) .25 participants attended this workshop including ( 20 males &5 females). The workshop started from 11:00 am up to 2:00 pm
o   The Second Workshop was held in the hall of Domiz Cultural center in Domiz collective Village which belong to Fayda sub district of Ninaveh governorate on the 31st of July 2006 and the targeted groups were from Domiz and other villages which belong to Domiz collective village( Sharia) and some participants from Fayda sub district itself. 25 participants attended this workshop including ( 17 males & 8 females) the workshop started from 4:00 pm up to 7:30 pm.
o   On the 6th of August 2006  a workshop was held in Alqosh ,in the hall of Chaldean Alqosh cultural center and the target groups were  from the member of the center, 12 males and 13 females most of the targeted groups were  teachers in Mosul University ,teachers and members of Alqosh women union.
o   On the 9th of August 2006 another workshop was held in shelhan district of Mosel governorate in the hall of Shekhan committee, 9 males and 16 females attended this workshop most of them were from Shekhan women union, members of Shekhan student union, teachers, Social welfare Institution as well as some University students.
o   On the 13th of August 2006 a workshop was held in Shekhan district of Mosul governorate , the targeted groups were from the villages which belong to this area, 12 males and 13 females attended this workshop.
o   On the 20th of  August 2006 a workshop was held in Domiz cultural center which belong to fayda sub district of Mosel governorate , 6 females and 19 males attended this workshop  and most of them were students of University of Mosel and Dohuk, the workshop was held in the hall of Domiz cultural center.
o   The other workshop was held on the 23rd of August 2006 in Dmiz  area in the area of Domiz women union, 35 females attended this workshop and most of them were women union members and some housewives participants.
o   On the 26th of August 2006 another workshop was held in Domiz collective ,29 participants attended this workshop including 8 females and 21 males most of them were from Domiz student union, some staffs of Agricultural directorate, police officers.
o   The other workshop was held on the 29th of August  in Domiz area  and the targeted groups were from teachers, students and some members of  Fayda area who attended this workshop, 25 persons participated in this activity.
o   The other workshop was held on the 30th of August 2006 in Domiz cultural center but the targeted groups were from Fayda area including teachers and  Student Union.
o    On the 5th of September a workshop was  held in Talesqof area which belongs to Mosel governorate, 27 participants attended this workshop including  9 females and 27 males from the Talesqof women union and some teachers as well as Talesqof student uion.

Most of the active Media representatives in Kurdistan area attended and covered the workshops and interviewed the attendees of the workshops. (Al-Iraqia Kurdistan Satellite Channel). Most of the activities were covered on daily bases in this web site www.ankawa.com and www.nahrain.com 







Workshop Discussions

   Most of the participants from the Yezedeans and Christian along with some Moslems supported the amendment or canceling of the article 41 in the Constitution concerning the PLS  for it is one of the Democracy steps that should be implemented in the new stage of Iraq and insisted that Islam should not be the main religion for issuing the legislations of the Laws.
    All agreed that there should be a Court according to their religions, ethnic groups, believes , choices and this will be applied by Iraqi Law which will also guarantee woman rights.
   Christians and Yezedeans should have more Democracy in following their religious rules in the civil Law of the Iraqi courts.
   Concerning the Christians, most of them agrees that the Church law should be followed in the Iraqi Courts in case of Divorce ( Church can not issue a divorce law only after 7 years given by church to both husband and wife but in the Iraqi court then can get divorced immediately).
   Democracy should be applied for all ethnic groups in Iraq equally.
   Most of the women participants insisted that men should also support them in this campaign actively to achieve Democracy in this country and guarantee woman rights.
   The participants agreed that this campaign is to change the article 41 of the PLS in the Constitution will guarantee woman's rights in case of divorce and protect the rights of the Iraqi family.
   The concern of the alternative law will be announced when the campaign of the NECI ,NGOs ,Media and the people who supported this program will achieve the success results and guarantee the changes of this Law.

   The NWCI is calling for this campaign due to many reasons that makes woman worried about the Article 41. First, women found this article will arrange the Personal Status Law according to a Law instead of having a united Law that can be applied to all Iraqis, thus there will be a risky in the procedure of implementing this law equally concerning the different ethnic groups and believes. Second woman found that the Iraqi personal Statue Law of 1959 is giving woman her most legal rights and assure the equality between genders inheritance.
 
   Most of the participants agreed to support the NWCI efforts and believe in the changes that should be taken to this article.

   Ninaveh participants will support this campaign and participate in the strikes hold by NWCI in Baghdad if there was a guarantee to save the participants due the security situation.

   The participants raised the concern that these workshops will help to assure woman rights and activate her role in the community in future.

Other Issues (Based on the Evaluation Forms of 50 participants)

    Most of the participants agreed on the amendment base of the 41 Articl3es of the Constitution concerning the PSL and to guarantee the rights of all minorities especially Christians and yezedeans.
    This Article should be amended on Democratic bases.
    Activating and assuring woman rights in the new amended Law.
    Activating these workshops to cover Nineveh villages.
    Supporting the NWCI and all Law that works to establish a democratic and a comfortable environment among all Iraqi people.
    Activating Media Role to support this campaign.
    Increasing the amount of the transportation expenditures.
