Under the authority of the Homeland Security Act of 2002, our office assists individuals and employers who experience specific problems during the benefits seeking process with U.S. Immigration and Citizenship Services (USCIS). Our authority is limited to matters involving the USCIS agency which handles certain key aspects of refugee status determinations for the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS). We may be able to assist with your inquiry, if your application is still pending with USCIS for a decision. However, other US government agencies are involved in the Refugee Status determination process, such as the Department of State, and may be of assistance. If, after our initial review, we determine that we cannot assist because your case is no longer pending with USCIS, please consult with your assigned Refugee Processing Center for help, at that time.
To review your inquiry and for privacy reasons we must have your consent. Therefore, you must submit your inquiry with a completed DHS Form 7001. You can find this form on our website at:
www.dhs.gov/cisombudsman. You may submit the form by email to:
cisombudsman@dhs.gov, fax 202-357-0042, or mail, along with the relevant supporting documentation.
Until we receive a completed DHS Form 7001 and review your inquiry, we will not know how, or if, our office may assist you. Therefore, your case will remain open for one week until we receive the signed DHS 7001.
Please note that the Ombudsman’s Office cannot compel USCIS to make a decision on a case, nor can it require USCIS to change a decision that it has made. Additionally, the Ombudsman’s Office is unable to help if you are seeking legal advice or assistance with an issue that does not involve USCIS. Please visit our website
