Last week, we told you about the way three Iraqi musicians, who themselves had been forced to flee Iraq, are making music and helping other Iraqi refugees who had to flee violence there.
Stories about the struggles of Iraqi refugees can also be found closer to home.
According to a recent report by the International Rescue Committee, Iraqi and other refugees resettled in the United States receive so little help from the US government while they search for jobs that they are in danger of becoming homeless.
Read the report and find out what you can do to help fix our broken refugee resettlement program.
Many of those who arrive are war widows with young children, alone and with little work experience, and lots of Iraqi refugees are traumatized survivors of torture, kidnapping, and death threats. Many others are highly-skilled professionals who are unable to find even entry-level jobs, despite tireless searching. These include Iraqis who risked their lives to save Americans through their work for the United States military or government in Iraq and are now targeted because of that work.
These people are "a living consequence" of the war in Iraq, the president said. You can help empower Iraqis, both overseas and in your local communities.
Here is how to do it:
1. Sign the International Rescue Committee's petition. Urge President Obama and Secretary Clinton to allow the resettlement of more Iraqis in the United States and to provide them with basic services.
2. Volunteer your time or donate. Find a local volunteer opportunity through VolunteerMatch or contact a local chapter of a refugee resettlement agency.
3. Tell your friends. Recruit your friends to volunteer with you or Twitter about the petition to the president. You will double your impact, and probably even have more fun doing it.
