What if I need to travel outside the United States while my adjustment application is pending?
As a refugee or asylee, if you wish to travel outside the United States for a brief period of time but return to your refugee or asylee status and continue to pursue your application for adjustment of status, you must apply for a refugee travel document

By law, refugees must apply for permanent resident status 1 year
after entry into the United States. In addition, according to USCIS
officials, if an Iraqi refugee returned to Iraq, it could raise issues
during the inspection process when attempting to return to the United
States, or as part of any application to adjust his/her immigration
status or obtain U.S. citizenship, as it could signal that the
individual's initial refugee claim may be fraudulent
