AUDAY ARABO - Democratic Candidate 78th Assembly District
Criminal prosecutor, business leader, and community volunteer…By the time Auday Arabo reached his 30’s he’d already made his mark in San Diego County. As chairman of the San Diego County Crime Commission he has earned the praise of law enforcement and the gratitude of crime victims and business leaders. Retired State Senator Wadie P. Deddeh, who represented various parts of this Assembly District for over 27 years, has called “Auday a rising star in the San Diego community who is going places.”
Here’s his remarkable story.
In 1979 in a search for freedom and better opportunities, the Arabo family immigrated to San Diego from Baghdad, Iraq. The Arabo family is a well-respected member of the Christian Chaldean community in San Diego County. In 1996, Auday experienced one of the proudest moments of his life when he was sworn in as a naturalized Citizen of the United States of America.
Auday’s first career was in the retail grocery business. He was only10 years old, but he began accompanying his father and grandfather to work, and over the years was able to learn the retail business from every angle.
Auday graduated from Valhalla High School and Grossmont Junior College before transferring to San Diego State University where he graduated Magna cum Laude.
After graduation he received an important opportunity. He was offered the position of Legislative Correspondent in Washington D.C. for Congressman Brian Bilbray. He spent a little under a year working in the Capitol—and in that short time received a valuable education in constituent service: as important as the “big” issues are, what counts most, he learned, is the impact of government on the everyday lives of people.
This experience awakened in Auday a desire for public service and he decided to further his education. He returned to San Diego and attended California Western School of Law, earning an academic scholarship. He received awards for his studies, including the prestigious Tammie L. Harris Memorial Award for his dedication to the community, educational achievements, leadership and commitment to diversity in the legal profession. Diversity has always been core belief for Auday, which he exemplified by working closely with La Raza Lawyers, the Persian/Middle Eastern Law Students Association, Pan Asian Student Bar Association and the Earl B. Gilliam Society.
After being admitted to the California Bar, Auday served as a criminal prosecutor for the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office. There he found himself in court everyday prosecuting cases of domestic violence, drunk driving, felony drug charges and more. He had opportunity to work briefly with renowned DNA expert, now Superior Court Judge, George “Woody” Clarke in the District Attorney’s DNA Project and earned the praise of his boss, then-Assistant District Attorney Greg Thompson: “Every time Auday stepped into the courtroom, you could see his passion for justice. He was committed to getting at the truth and absolutely committed to helping crime victims, those folks who arrive in the system through no fault of their own.”
Even as Auday settled into a career as a criminal prosecutor, another opportunity was in the making. He was asked to return to his roots—in retail business and community service—and to take on an important leadership post at an important time. He accepted and became President and CEO of Neighborhood Market Association (previously known as California Independent Grocers & Convenience Stores). It proved a wise choice, as he was able to accomplish a merger between the California Independent Grocers and Convenience Stores and the California Beverage Merchants, creating the largest independent grocers association on the West Coast.
Auday’s work on behalf of neighborhood markets took him routinely to Sacramento—to the State Capitol and the offices of State leaders, including the Governor. He admits he didn’t always like what he saw—partisanship and egos getting in the way of real work on the problems of Californians. But he also saw an opportunity for service, for a chance to make a difference.
Then, last year, Auday’s father died. He was devastated by the loss. The elder Arabo had been father, friend and mentor. The loss caused Auday to reflect on his future and the opportunities he’s been blessed to receive through his family, his community and this country. He decided to put his knowledge and life experience to work to serve the public in a new way. Today he is a Democratic Candidate for the 78th Assembly District.
Throughout his career, Auday has remained committed to the community and has volunteered countless hours to the following:
• Chairman – San Diego County Crime Commission
• Board Member – San Diego County Crime Stoppers
• Board Member – National Latino Peace Officers Association, San Diego County Chapter and South State Government Affairs Secretary – NLPOA
