Deplores the criminal attack on His Beatitude Bishop Mar Mary

The "Australian Iraqi University Forum", the "Association of Iraqi Academics in Australia and New Zealand" and the "Human Rights Defense Committee - Australia" strongly condemn the heinous crime of the armed attack on His Beatitude Bishop Mar Mary Emmanuel while he was performing Mass in the Church of Christ the Good Shepherd. Good Shepherd Church in Weakley in western Sydney.

A crime of this heinous nature can only be faced with the utmost denunciation , and this is what we have witnessed since the first hours following the attack, since yesterday evening , Monday, in a torrent of telegrams and messages of denunciation and condemnation included all social, academic, and religious circles from various religions, sects, and ethnicities.

As in all crimes of fanaticism and extremism that our societies have experienced, the perpetrator (and whoever may stand behind him) represents no one but himself (and whoever may stand behind him), and his identity does not, in any way, represent any religion, sect, or creed. All religions have one source (the Creator, Glory be to Him) and are united by His teachings in Love among human beings, tolerance, peace, and protection of people of different religions and ethnicities .
Terrorism , violence, and harming others have never been linked to a religion or sect.

This crime comes in the context of a number of violent incidents that our Australian country has witnessed, the most recent of which was the stabbing crime in the Bondi markets last Saturday, which claimed the lives of seven innocent people , in a phenomenon that seems strange to this safe country, which raises concern in all circles .

We wish His Beatitude the Bishop a speedy recovery and we hope that everyone will contribute to calming feelings, calling for common sense, raising the sense of responsibility, ensuring the safety of the members of our community regardless of their various religious and ethnic affiliations, and reviving the traditions of coexistence that brought them together in the land of Mesopotamia throughout their history.
